Ask Dizzy Hips

Ask Dizzy question, he will give you an answer!

What is the best sized hula-hoop for me?

Why does Dizzy hula-hoop a 75 LB tractor tire?

What doe s Dizzy eat for breakfast?

Why combine primitive arts and hoops for retreats?

If dizzy is a dancer and a hooper is he also a hoop- dancer?

Did dizzy really learn to hula-hoop in the  days before circles were invented?!?!?!

Is that really why he performs with the legendary “square la hoop”?

  1. How do I find the best hoop for exercise AND what kind do you suggest purchasing? I have just learned about this and cannot hoop YET!

    • Hi Mary,
Of course I recommend you buy my hoops! I have been making hoops since 1993 and keep coming up with new ways of constructing them to make them better and stronger and last longer. I have done it so long I can make them very quickly and efficiently -thats why mine are cheaper than others! I cant make them in my sleep but i can make them while hooping!

The diameter of my show hoops are about 1.15 x the circumference of my waist. if the diameter of the hoop is 2x the circumference of your waist it will be very easy, but will greatly limit the range of tricks you can do. i recommend 1.5 to start. So a 30 inch waist would use a 45 inch hoop. that would be easy, but still fairly versitile and portable.
      Hoopy happing

  2. Hi,

I’m a 5-year user of a hoop I bought from you at Seattle Center after I played with it and couldn’t bear to leave without it.

Now I’m going to be in another country for a while and as silly as it sounds, I want to show my friends there my unusual skills. They were more impressed by my throwaway comment that “when I was a kid, I won baton twirling contests and a hula hoop marathon, and I can still do those things” than I ever would have expected, so I *have* to demonstrate it.

Problemizz, it’d be prohibitively expensive to take my hoop and I don’t know how to construct a properly weighted hoop, or how to connect the ends of tubing, etc. I use one of your larger hoops, is all I know. :-} Can you tell me how to make a hoop overseas that I stand a chance of being able to use well?

    Thanks.

    • Hi Helen,
WEre you able to get your hoopto another country?
I rarely have a problem, especially internationally. I just throw my whole bundle in checked baggage. they almost never charge, unless I am bring more than 50 or so or if I have my tractor tire.

the other thing you can do is find the seeme of your hoop and pull it apart, then roll itighter , strap it to the outside of a bag.

      hoopy trails!

    • To, Helen. My friend sam makes my hula hoops what she does is she gets a 10 foot piece of pva tubing and makes into a circle then she raps realy cool colored hockey tape around it. It makes it heaver whitch i think is easyer because it stays on my hips better i have a circus preformance on febuary.23/10 and im really exited ive been practicing in my driveway witch is hard because its snowing constantly so i hope you can get back to me by then.

Ps. Try making one of sams hoops.
      Sincerly,
      Amber-Lee

  3. Hi D, I have recently saw your performance of hula-hooping. I have to admit that when my daughter came home from school that day and told me about it I was a little skeptical of how your act was, but then she told me about the tractor tire and I had to go see for myself. The whole day I was thinking about how cheesey it was gonna be, but when we got to the school and met you I was surprised to find out you were a guy and the size of you and that tire, well, let’s just say I couldn’t wait to see you perform.
The way you interacted with all the children and how well you were at hula-hooping with all those hoops at one time, and even while walking on your hands, I was very, very, very, very, very, very impressed. You made it look so easy. I was also very impressed with the schools choice on picking such an entertaining act for family night. I hope you got paid well for that night-after all, you deserved it. I wish you the best of luck on your journey, and I hope you will be able to inspire and entertain people of all ages for years to come. I just have one question for you…………………………………………….
    Are you married? :-)

  4. Hi Paul,

  6. Hi Dizzy. I would like to purchase a weighted, large hoop from you. Can you please tell me how. Thank you Melissa Bacelar

  7. Hello-there –
My friend Courtney Nelson said you were going to be performing in Vancouver sometime during the Olympics. I’m going to be there, too, visiting my brother and his new baby and I’m hoping we can catch your act! Where will you be when? I’m traveling wit hme ‘usban’ and my friend Val (we hula-hoop together every Thursday, in Juneau,AK, with a group of folk). Maybe Courtney will come, too! We takethe train from Seattle Wednesday night, 2/18, and leave Sunday morning, 2/22. Somewhere in there we have tickets to see curling, and ski-jumping. Where can we get tickets to see YOU?
    Thanks!

  10. Hi Paul,
I’m not sure where you’re living now, but I’m hoping you could perform for us at a carnival in the Seattle area in June. Any chance of that?
