Quest for the “Holy Grail of Hula-Hooping”—-FULL STORY
Paul “Dizzy Hips Blair”, performer, team-building coach and fitness instructor (USA), made the journey to New York City on a quest for the “holy grail” of hula-hooping- the Guinness World Record for “The Most Hoops Spun Simultaneously”. A lot was riding on his scheduled 2 minute slot on CBS’ “The Early show”; among other things, his title as “The Hula-hoop Man”.
“Guinness World Records Day” was on November 12, 2009. CBS “the Early Show” hosted almost 2 weeks of record attempts, but almost every attempt failed in the days leading up to the big day. As the last contestant on the last day, Dizzy had his work cut out. He was going for two records; “The most revolutions of a hoop around the hips in one minute” and “the most hoops spun simultaneously”. He had won the rpm’s last year on ESPN, which he set at 197 rpm, but he recently lost it to a Chinese gymnast, who got 211. For “The Most Hoops”, Dizzy hooped 106 hoops at once on KTLA, Los Angeles last year but was edged out by a Swedish hoopster who got 107.
On the Early Show, Dizzy first attempted the hula-hoop rpm’s but high winds and a bobble of the hoop was enough to miss the record by 5 revolutions. That left “the most hoops”, the final record of “Guinness World Record Day” on “the Early Show”. Not wanting to have the record taken any time soon, Dizzy took a big chance, adding not just a few, but 25 hoops to the previous record. He had just a few seconds to accomplish the task.
According to Guinness rules, the hoops have to be regular store-bought hoops, they have to stay between the knees and shoulders and they ALL have to go around at least 3 times (Dizzy says the top ones go slower so the bottom 70 or so hoops have to go around at least 6 times.) CBS’ Harry Smith gave him a “ready, set, go” and the audience held their breath. Dizzy swung the 40 pounds of plastic with all his might and gyrated like he was trying to make the Spruce Goose fly with hip-power. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 times around! Harry Smith commented “this could be a whole new standard”. Dizzy Hips, the virtual “Jackie Chan” of hula-hoops, had set the new Guinness World Record for the most hoops at 132 hoops!
Dizzy gets plenty practice for his world records by performing his comedy and spectacle hula-hoop shows. At one point in his show, as many as 50 audience members throw hula-hoops on him in a trick called “The Human Ring Toss.” “Hoops are flying everywhere” he describes, “I should probably wear pads and a helmet, but it’s a lot of fun”. Of his hundreds of tricks, including “the most hoops”, it’s his 100 pound tractor tire hooping that literally makes the biggest impression. Dizzy regularly performs this and other signature tricks like “Square Hooping”, “Two-Person Hooping” and “Walking on the Hands while Hooping” at events, halftimes, schools and even ski resorts.
Dizzy Hips uses his world record setting abilities, circus skills and creative talent to raise money for parks and recs, schools and other charities, having helped fund-raise over $400,000 so far! The Few the Proud, The Hula-Hoop Men
To all Men who love to hoop. I would like to welcome you to the (thankfully) girl-dominated world of hula-hooping (you cant argue with the shakin hips and exposed bellies). Still as men, we have to hold our ground. Part of that is calling it Hula-hooping – not hooping. “Hooping” is too cool, it’s as if we’re trying to pretend it’s not that girls toy everyone remembers from the playground. leave “cool” for the girls, you know the ones, the “I am just casually spinning my hoop, not trying to get anyone’s attention…here, in the middle of this park, on a sunny Saturday, wearing my ‘hoopin’ outfit which aint nothin but two band-aids and a cork, plus the compulsory boots with fur” ….you get the point, just leave cool to the girls. We men, on the other hand, are not fooling anyone. We’re grown men who love hula-hooping- we are ridiculous and absurd; the way of the goof ball is written in the cards for us. Now Matt Plendl has the best spectacle hoop act in the world, but he is totally gay and lovin it- so he’s not really gonna be our spokesmodel (sorry Matt). We have to accept the absurdity of being men in a girls sport- emmerse yourself in the absurdity- bath in it like the blood of a rubber chicken. then and only then can you be at one with the centrifugal force. And you will be invincible! I am Dizzy Hips; the Hula-Hoop Man, gyrating my hips with a girly toy for a living and by-golly i am proud of it. Who among you will join me?

Thanks for sharing!
Blessings for a blissful Hoopy 2010!
